Read full description of the books:
After reading what was, to me, a disappointing portrayal of M.F.K. Fisher in another writer’s book, I decided to read some of Fisher’s own writing to see if I could glean something more of her personality that wasn’t filtered by someone else’s perceptions. (See my review of “Between Friends: M.F.K. Fisher and Me.”) So, I reached for a copy of “Dubious Honors” that’s been languishing, unread, on my bookshelf for years.
“Dubious Honors” is conceptually very strange, but it works and I found it interesting. It’s a collection of introductions. Introductions to other people’s books that M.F.K. Fisher wrote over the years. Each one with a new introduction by Fisher in which she reflects on the particular story behind each...um...introduction.
It’s a little less weird to read, and was actually rather enjoyable if you’re the kind of person who likes the “behind-the-scenes” type of books.
I must say, though, that I wonder if the authors of some of these books got the kind of introduction they were looking for. Fisher is very much her own person with strong opinions, and sometimes those opinions run counter to the best interest of the book she was writing an introduction for. They are expressed subtly, in a turn of phrase or carefully placed word, but they are there. I appreciate non-conformism, but why agree to write an introduction if you’re just going to undermine the book, however subtle you might be?
But, it makes for interesting reading and I'd like to explore some of Fisher's own books - and check out the introductions to them!
I certainly haven’t encountered this type of book before. (Or this type of writer!)

Read information about the authorMary Frances Kennedy Fisher was a prolific and well-respected writer, writing more than 20 books during her lifetime and also publishing two volumes of journals and correspondence shortly before her death in 1992. Her first book, Serve it Forth, was published in 1937. Her books deal primarily with food, considering it from many aspects: preparation, natural history, culture, and philosophy. Fisher believed that eating well was just one of the "arts of life" and explored the art of living as a secondary theme in her writing. Her style and pacing are noted elements of her short stories and essays.
